IXD 104 – Travel App – Creating my Icon Set
Creating My Icon Set
Before starting to create my app layout, I took to figma to create a set of icons that I would use for my app. I knew in my head what type of icons I might need as I needed 5 main icons that linked to my main screens that would all sit in my dock bar. Before beginning to design my icons I had a look at Instagram and VSCO, as their clean modern designs are what I want to take main inspiration from. I love how their icons and app layout is all sort of rounded and smooth flowing. I don’t get a sense of sharpness or aggressiveness from their apps which I find to be very appealing and calming, and ultimately I want to reiterate this is my own app via my icons.

I began designing my 5 main icons on figma, using geometric shapes and lines only to create my icon set. I tried to keep my icons to the dimension 80 x 80 pixels to ensure that if I had to shrink them down they would still look proportionate to each other. I enjoyed making an icon set as it was interesting to once again see how much you can create elegant and simple designs using only basic shape.
After creating my 5 main icons I created a few more that I know are a necessity on most apps and would work on my app. Below is my designed icon set.
