model design

I continued to ideate on the monster bone sword and shield. One of my lectures suggested I take inspiration from Monster Hunter’s iconic weapons which are constructed from the parts of monsters within the game. I love the big shapes used to create imposing silhouettes.

I made lots of silhouette designs to find the most interesting and appealing shape. The shield was already a strong design that needed slight tweaking whereas the sword needed a complete re-design. I really enjoyed making variations on the sword. Asking family and friends their opinions on the design helped me identify problems and make creative decisions to achieve the desired effect. The sword and shield needed to look cartoonish but intimidating and be made out of the bones of an otherworldly creature. The shield was modelled after a triceratops skull. I added multiple eyes for an element of fantasy. I learned this design formula from this video on imaginative realism in Monster hunter.

Below are the references I used to make my final design taken from google.

Below is my final design and process.

I tried drawing an imagined polygon map over the 2d image as a guide. Whilst this is a helpful exercise to imagine the 3d shape of the object I end up diverting from this map for the final model.
