The organic model brief was to design a cute character. When I get a brief with too much creative freedom I can get stuck in the ideation phase with infinite possibilities so I narrowed down my choices early by listing my favourite animals and choosing one to design a character around. I chose a vampire bat because their a perfect mix of creepy and cute with a lot of interesting proportions. The character I created is Ophelia (Like haemophilia) A vampire who got stuck as a vampire bat. I created a reference board and drew sketches to brainstorm and find the character’s personality. Cute characters tend to have big heads ears and eyes with small bodies because we associate them with babies. Her body is more humanoid to communicate her backstory. I used a lot of rounded lines and corners to soften her appearance but kept her fangs sharp showing that she’s not completely helpless. I chose victorian clothing to establish the setting and sell the vampire concept. I liked the idea that the proud and fearsome vampire is now forced to wear frilly children’s /doll clothes.
Below is my inspiration/reference board none of the art or images are my own.
Below are drawings from my sketchbook and the final T pose reference sheet.
