The first assignment was drawing contours over shapes to give them dimension. When I translate this to cartoon drawing it gives characters a greater sense of space and believability.
I struggle with drawing men but I wanted to push myself to progress so my next choice was Grunkle Stan from Gravity Falls. I first drew a gesture to prevent stiffness in the pose then added a grid to draw his shapes.
Hercules was the most challenging to draw. I have been making my way through the Aron Blaise anatomy for artists course. Hercules is a perfect example of how to exaggerate real muscles. I chose an action that felt appropriate for the character that I found looking at pictures of athletes. After completing this assignment I feel more comfortable stylising the male figure but I wish I spent more time analysing Hurcleses turnaround sheet to maintain a likeness in his face.
I found it difficult to maintain a likeness and I had to keep referring back to my reference and thinking about how shapes would change in different poses and perspectives but it was incredibly useful in getting me out of my comfort zone as I should be able to draw multiple styles and characters for studio animation.
