27/09/21-Lecture.
This was my second lecture with Paul, I wanted to write a short blog post to make sure that I understood and could recall what we did on Mondays class. This week was a lot more technical with more being done on computer and learning the ropes of figma.
Golden Ratio/Fibonacci Sequence-
We started by learning about the golden ratio of design/ The Fibonacci sequence
This was the main focus of Paul’s lecture. These methods really made sizing and spacing of design a lot more clear. These gave structure to what I was designing and how it should really be laid out to be pleasing to the user. The golden ratio shows the different sizes of components that may be found in a design. We seen that the golden ratio can be found in many different places, like in nature, the golden ratio of a shell or even an egg.
This was the collective miso board we did as a class, so we could see other peoples work and gain inspiration/ideas. It was useful to see how my peers took a certain task and in what direction they were going.
Gestalt Principles
This was another principle we learnt about. This is when an image is created but our minds will fill in the blanks to create a full picture. The principles include:
- Proximity
- Similarity
- Continuity
- Closure
- Common fate
- Figure and ground
- Focal point.
These all need to be present to create an effective Gestalt. There are many examples used in branding. Such as:
The World Wild Life Fund.
>I hope to gain more photos over the coming weeks of this principle.
In design this principle is used to create separation between objects without the need for boarders.

Law of Pragnanz.
We also learnt about the law of pregnanz which relates to simplicity. It is a law that shows when your brain is fixed with a complex problem it will reduce the problem to its simplest form to help understanding.

TYPE.
In this class we also learnt about type and the hierarchy which comes with type. How there are appropriate measurements for type of certain sizes, weather that is to make type stand out or to ensure type is aligned properly. To practice this Paul showed us a website called Typescale.com. This was a very helpful website because it gave pixel measurements for the size of type. This led us to redoing our Manifesto from week 1 to make the type more appropriately aligned.
This was the result of putting the type scale to use, it allowed my manifesto to appear more professional and give a better effect than the original. However, I would have made the body text a lot darker to ensure it stands out.
Putting Everything into Practice.
After going over all of this in the lecture. We put into practice what we had learned on figma, by doing more point, line and plane templates.
This was my final result, it was great to have more structure in my sequences, as it did not feel like I was just placing random lines and points on a page for no reason.
For our second activity we also created vague home pages that we would find on our phone. I really enjoyed this activity because it felt like the work we had been doing was finally being put to use.
These were the screens I had created. For my first attempt I think they are of a good standard but I know there is a lot I could do to improve them, such as, using more high contrast shades of grey.
What I learned.
This lecture was very informative and we are really starting to get into the details of the basics of design. I have learned:
- About the golden ratio.
- Splitting designs into grids of three.
- Gestalt principles.
- Law of Pragnanz.
- Sizing Type.
- Becoming more fluent in Figma.
What I need to review.
- Creating more meaning behind my point, line and plane.
- Researching structures of different apps.
- Become more confident with the designs I can create.
