Line sketches for final project.
These are some of my final sketches which I have done on procreate. This is for the line section of my first project. It is something I have never really thought about because I never realised that a simple line could turn into so many things and could bring so much variety. For the line section of our project we had to use the words frequency, symmetry, asymmetry and rhythm. Each of my grids show a different take on some of these words.
Lines can be used in many different ways to show different pieces of information. They are found everywhere in apps, sketches, grids and line charts, etc. A simple line can show a whole host of information if used in the right way.
The main point of this blog post is to explain my thinking behind my initial sketches and why I chose the ones I did for my final project.
Sketch number 1-
This sketch is based on the rhythm of weather patterns from different places around the world. Each line represents a different temperature, the thicker the line the hotter a country was in that particular month. With the blue lines representing negative temperatures. The cities I choose had completely different weather patterns in 2020, I have chosen London, Moscow and Dubai as my main cities because I knew the line thickness would have been greatly varied.
London
Dubai
Moscow
Sketch number 2-
This is not one of the sketches I went for in the end but I still think it is important to show this as part of my thought process. This sketch was used to represent frequency, I used lines to show the higher the frequency the thinner the lines became.
Sketch number 3-
This sketch was fairly simple, I just experimented with lines and how they could be used. In the first row I only used horizontal lines, in the second row I used horizontal and vertical lines, with the third row being vertical, horizontal and diagonal. I liked this sketch but I thought it would be better used when I come to do something similar for my planes section of the project.
Sketch number 4-
This sketch really tested me because I wanted to see how frequently one pattern could be used. In all 4 squares the line pattern is the same but I changed the direction and rotation of the pattern to make a whole new pattern. I was also able to bring frequency into this sketch because within this pattern the same concept of a previous sketch applies, the higher the frequency the thinner the line.
Sketch number 5-
I particularly love this sketch because it really does show how a simple line can create anything depending on how it is used. For this sketch I varied the thickness of the lines to create a silhouette of a face. This sketch shows the symmetry and asymmetry of a face. This was a really interesting concept and I really enjoyed this idea.
Final Decision.
For my final project I have decided to go with sketches- 1, 4 and 5 for various reasons because I liked the logic behind each of these line drawings more than the rest. They provide structure and allow me to put to use what I have learned in Pauls lectures about, grids, golden ratio and the fibonacci sequence can all be put to good use with these initial sketches.
