Wilson Miner-When We Build

This is Wilson Miner. Wilson Miner is a digital designer based in San Francisco and is currently working as a product designer for Apple. This was a talk he did all about design and as I begin this course of design myself he is a great designer with amazing perspective the I can now look up to as I reach towards my future goals. There are many aspects of this talk that grabbed my attention. He started off by talking about his childhood home, saying “We put so much of ourselves into these things but they are just things, they are empty vessels for us to fill” which got me thinking about how this can be related to so much in life, without humans this earth would just be empty, it is our job to fill it, weather that be with good or bad.

Another quote that stood out to me was “We shape our tools and there after our tools shape us.” I did not really understand this concept at first but once Wilson gave the example of the car it made everything else make sense. He showed how the human race built cars but then cars altered the way we live, eg we built motorways and petrol stations to fit around this one machine.

Wilson compared the simplest technology, “The screen” to a car, showing that the screen is the 21st century equivalent to a car and how we are starting to build our lives around screens. As we are all guilty of letting our screens be the first thing we touch in the morning without even thinking.

It gave purpose for the course I am about to step into because it showed me that in the future I could be designing apps and interfaces that people spend so much of their time on. In turn Wilson’s talk showed me that there has never been a more important time for good design.

Lastly, the quote that stood out to me was “When we build, let us think that we build forever.” Our designs should not standstill but continuously evolve into something better and like plants adapt to the surroundings they find themselves.
