Research.
My research for my type specimen screen started off by going right back to the beginning and gaining an understanding of a typeface.
This is the definition I found when researching a typeface. However, this got me thinking about terminology and the difference between a typeface and a font because font is so readily used in my vocabulary without actually knowing what it is. After researching the difference this made my research easier as I now understood which was which. A typeface is the general construction and original design, Eg Helvetica. Wereas a font is a design within that font, eg Helvetica Italic.
Kyle gave us 6 typefaces to base our type specimen screen on-
- Futura.
- Palatino.
- Times New Roman.
- Helvetica.
- Baskerville.
- Gill Sans.
In turn, before I could make a decision about my type specimen screen I had to choose the right typeface this is what led me to research each typeface individually to make the correct decision.

Futura
Futura is a smooth and simple typeface, it has been used in many brand such as Supreme, Gofundme, Louis Vuitton, being used in these brands it shows that it is a very versatile typeface being used both in high end brands and professional websites. It was designed in 1927 by Paul Renner. Futura was also used on the plaque that was left on the moon in Apollo 11 mission. This information about Futura was so interesting, as it showed me how typefaces can be used in so many ways.

Times New Roman
This font was created in 1932. It is most famous for its use in “The Times” Newspaper and more recently Vouge has found it very popular. FUTURA
After collecting background research on each typeface to understand them better. I then had to look into what each typeface actually looked like and which would could be a good fit for the specimen screen I am trying to create.
First we had Futura. These are come extremely interesting designs I collected throughout my research. I loved the simple type of taking Futura right back to were it came from, different shapes just how an can be simplified down into a triangle.
GILL SANS
These specimen designs of Gills Sans really took my interest because they are based on the physical items that the Typeface was used for. I loved how an individual incorporated the penguin books into their poster to show what gill sans has been used for.
HELVETICA
This poster of Helvetica was a different style to other posters that I choose for other fonts but I really enjoyed the use of colours and overlapping opacity made it all work really well together. The colour palate was also something that caught my interest because they are the colours that make up the ink cartridges in my printer at home.
PALATINO
This simple black and white poster for the typeface of Palatino inspired me for the specimen screen I want to create. I want to create something that is sleek and timeless but also shows luxury. I believe this poster shows this very well especially with the placement and composition of letters.
TIMES NEW ROMAN
Times New Roman is the typeface which really grabbed my attention when researching different poster inspiration. These posters showed purpose behind the typeface while also incorporating illustrations. The news paper style was really eye catching as the composition is similar to that of the Times Newspaper but they went a step further by adding other type around the message.
BASKERVILLE
Lastly, I researched Baskerville. This typeface design was also one I really enjoyed. Particularly the way all of the different letters are composed to make a great space for extra information about this Type face.
FUTURA.
This is the typeface I decided to go for this is because of the history that Futura has and the significance it has in space. This Typeface allows me to be more creative with certain letters that have really stood out to me when researching.
