Week 1 Point sketches for final draft.

Sketches and Research of my Final Point Project.

Thought Process Behind Each Design.

DISPERSE

This is the word I have chosen to follow for my point designs. Paul wanted us to create 3, 3×3 grids and represent this word in each of them. I decided to sketch out some rough concepts before jumping into my final project draft. But first I had to gain some inspiration. I decided to use many different images as inspiration because depending on how a point is dispersed it can change the whole meaning of a photo.

1.Braille

The first concept that came to my mind when thinking of points was braille because it shows how a simple point can be turned into a complete language for those who cannot see. However, I wanted to make the braille points more interesting, so I incorporated an aspect of caricature art into my point designs, where the patterns were kept the same but the points were exaggerated to create a more interesting pattern. In my first grid, as you will see I have created the word Disperse in a caricature style braille.

This is caricature artist Tom Richmond from which I took some inspiration, as we can see he takes features from a portrait and exaggerates aspect of their face to create the final picece.

2.Spread Out.

The second grid focusses on literal dispersion. I did not do a lot of research into this particular grid. Instead I just tried to come up with points that to be represent the word dispersion. This is why a lot of the points are spread out. There is no clean rhythm to this grid but I feel that dispersion allows that free movement within that grid.

3.Gestalt Principles.

For grid number 3, I wanted to try and recap what Paul said in our previous lecture and incorporate Gestalt principles. Meaning that I would allow the person viewing this grid to fill in what they see in each individual square. Showing that how points are dispersed or placed makes a big difference to what an individual may see.My main inspiration was from the World Wildlife Fund and there simple yet effective use of Gestalt principles.

4. Space

During the Point, Line and Plane class we also talked about a website that has put space into proportion, with the moon only being 1 pixel. This was my inspiration for grid 4. However, I am going to be using the golden ration to keep points in proportion and their relative size in space. Eg, Jupiter is bigger than earth so I have used the fibonacci sequence accordingly to disperse the planets correctly. With the last square representing the milky way Galaxy as a whole.

5. Dandelion

The 5th grid is a lot more simple than the rest. I really enjoyed the inverted look of the space grid so I decided to carry the same style into the next concept. With inspiration from a dandelion because of how it is intact when nothing is moving it and how it can disperse beautifully when moved or disrupted.

6. Object Dispersion.

My last grid shows the dispersion of objects found in my room alone. It shows how different points in my room when brought back to the very basics are exactly that, points.

These are the objects for which I based my last grid points on. We have tea stains on one of my books, a clock and even the way my coat pocket was placed. It challenged me to find inspiration in everything around me.

The Final Sketches and Evaluation of which grids will be in my final project.

These are my final sketches for each of my ideas. However I can only choose 3 to represent my final project. In turn I have had to critically evaluate each grid and what works best for the word “disperse” which I am trying to convey.

For my final grids I have chosen

1, 2 and 4.

You may be asking,  WHY have I chosen these three out of all six of my designs? I have chosen theses three in particular because grids 3,5 and 6 did not flow as well as the other three. I feel that the thought process behind 1,2 and 4 was a lot more in depth in turn each of the grids hold more meaning while also helping me to put into practice what Paul has been teaching us in lectures. Eg, Fibonacci Sequence.

Final words.

Overall, the point aspect of my project has been super exciting to work on, It has allowed me to gain some more creative freedom but also be critical in what I want to actually present as a final draft. The point exercise has helped prepare me for what I plan to do for my line and plane grids.
