IXD102: Week 3- A Century of Change

In class we began to learn about the change in century which brought about a new wave of tech with it. We looked at people such as Joseph Wiepie who in 1826 took what is said to be the first ever photo and Matthew Brady (1822-1896),  one of the first real great minds in photographic journalism, taking photos of celebrities such as Abraham Lincoln.

We were then taught how as time progressed tools such as Zoetop, mutoscope and Thaumatrope weere developed, creating the earliest form of animation with people like Eadweard Muybridge pioneering motion capture. This new wave was then followed by a movement known as Japonism which refers to a 19th century craze for Japanese Art, which became a significant influence for western art. Artists such as Vincent Van Gough were influenced by this movement along with many other 19th century artists.

We were given 3 new pocket profiles to look at this week: Una Kravets, Sara Soueidan and Vic Bell.

We then moved onto the anti industrial revolution which was a movement that provided opposition to the new art designs that were being manufactured by machinery with leading critics such as John Ruskin spearheading the movement. We also learned about the Glasgow school which was a collection of artists who took refuge in Glasgow. They were influenced by Celtic Art and by the end of the 19th Century it was one of the leading Art academy in Europe.

We finished with the advent of Graphic Design, learning about people such as Peter Behrens who used the grid design in his own designs and also heavily pushed Sans Serif type fonts. By working with the company AEG he became the first to create logos, posters and promo material for a company.
