IXD104 – Week 11 – The Art of Information

This week’s lecture focused on the topic of the art of Information and began by introducing us to a range of different key figureheads in the field and I wanted to take a closer look into each of them.

Brendan Dawes:

Brendan Dawes is a UK based artist using generative processes involving data, machine learning and code, to create interactive installations, electronic objects, online experiences, data visualizations, motion graphics and physical sculptures

Brendan draws much of his inspiration from popular culture and nature, often revolving his work around the concept of time and memory. These analytical explorations into our relationship with time and space have been an ongoing theme in Dawes’s work as he continues to question our understanding of the surrounding world. Following his Genesis NFT on KnownOrigin selling within the hour to legendary collector WhaleShark, Dawes went on to release a collection on Nifty Gateway – selling out in under sixty seconds. He has also released work on MakersPlace, Foundation and SuperRare.

Big Data is a term used to describe a collection of data that is huge in size and yet growing exponentially with time. Big Data analytics examples includes stock exchanges, social media sites, jet engines, etc.

Jer Thorp:

Jer Thorp is a Canadian data artist from Vancouver, British Columbia. Before becoming a data artist, he was originally trained as a geneticist. He holds an adjunct faculty position at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in the Interactive Telecommunications Program. Jer is one of the world’s foremost data artists, and is a leading voice for the ethical use of big data. Jer’s data-inspired artwork has been shown around the world, including most recently in New York’s Times Square, at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan, at the Ars Electronica Center in Austria, and at the National Seoul Museum in Korea. His work has also appeared in a wide variety of publications, including Scientific American, The New Yorker, Popular Science, Fast Company, Business Week, Popular Science, Discover, WIRED and The Harvard Business Review

Aaron Koblin:

Aaron Koblin is an American digital media artist and entrepreneur best known for his innovative use of data visualization and his pioneering work in crowdsourcing, virtual reality, and interactive film. He is co-founder and president of virtual reality company Within, founded with Chris Milk.

Chris Jordan:

Chris Jordan (born 1963) is an American artist, photographer and film producer based in Seattle, Washington. Many of Jordan’s works are created from photographs of garbage and mass consumption, a serendipitous technique which started when he visited an industrial yard to look at patterns of color and order. Jordan uses everyday commonalities such as a plastic cup and defines the blind unawareness involved in American consumerism. His work, while often unsettling, is a message about unconscious behaviors in our everyday lives, leaving it to the viewer to draw conclusions about the inevitable consequences which will arise from our habits.
