Denim Challenge

For the Denim challenge we were set, I wanted to do something that I felt was a little out of my comfort zone. I had only ever hand stitched things before as my mother had taught me to do but I had been gifted her sewing machine for my birthday and was yet to use it and felt this was the perfect opportunity. I had only 1 piece of denim to work with and cut it along the seams to try and save as much material as possible. My idea was to create a sort of denim bralette/top.

After I had cut the denim, I measured my friend Amanda, as she was going to be my model for the piece of clothing I was going to make. I kept the original hem on the bottom of the two almost triangle shapes I had cut then just added a hem long both sides. I cut the waist band off the denim shorts and used this as the main structure of the top to work from and attached the two triangles to. I then cut the band in half removing the back of it and attached a mesh material that was once a scarf to add some colour and to act as back support. From there I used the remaining mesh material, sewn to the top of the triangles, to create a halter neck support to keep the top up.
I really enjoyed this task as I had never made an actual piece of clothing before and got to use a sewing machine for the first time, both things I have always wanted to try. The denim was too thick in some parts for the sewing machine and my lack of experience caused the needles to get bent and break, so hand stitch some of the piece together, which I also enjoyed. I would love to do something like this again or in the future make some of my own clothes.
