Final Week: Coursework 1 – Design a World: Evaluation

During this semester, things that worked well I think were the teams themselves as they were open to ideas and input from students, lecturers, and teammates alike. We all put in lots of effort into the work. The lectures and presentations were also well done and easy to follow too. However, in the first weeks of Animation Studio we were rotating/switching teams. The idea was for us to get accustomed to switching groups because in an animation company it happens a lot. The problem was that we lost incentive from the second to fourth week as we knew we would be swapped the next week. I can’t say my work didn’t dip, I did try to keep working.

In this semester from creatively working in a team I learned that while no one idea is going to stay the same, input can and will be taken into consideration and can influence how the final results come out. I also learned that by multiple people working on the same characters or designs, many different iterations will be made and come together to make the final design that will be agreed on. While there is a lot of leeway in this kind of teamwork, we depended on one another so I was motivated to keep on top of the work to not delay anyone because of me.

If I could start the module over again, I would probably remind myself to be less detailed in my animated work so as to not waste time on overly detailed parts. I would also try and work on finalising the characters and ref sheets sooner, so I don’t sacrifice any more time in production as well as the quality of the designs themselves. I’d also put in more effort to use and understand Krita to be able to use it more frequently. While I’m ok with using photoshop I think adding that flexibility would do well for future occasions.

I need to focus more fully on working on my animation sequences without any distractions, (podcasts, songs, videos, etc) while I work as I usually sideline my work a bit by going down some rabbit holes. This should be obvious, but it’s taking me longer to implement than I would like to admit. But I am incentivised and motivated to improve myself for class, so I think I can achieve this. I also need to be more simple with my early production stages, like storyboards and rough animations.

I think if I want to change anything it would be improving my work prioritisation and production order. I must focus on getting work done in a quicker, more reasonable order. I might need to go to campus more in order to concentrate and get more work done. It’s harder to get distracted in class versus my room. A few things I can still do include using Discord to keep in contact with teammates and learn of any changes to the plans or roles. I think going on youtube looking for references for animation is something worth keeping. While it’s a gamble if I stay on topic, It provides a means of making my animations be more real in a way.
