Product Design – Artist Research, Paul Jackson

For our research for product design, we were asked to research 3 paper artists for inspiration. The first paper artist that caught my interest was Paul Jackson.

Jackson was born in Leeds in England and has been a paper artist/engineer, teacher and writer since 1983 and he specialises in origami and folded paper. The first book he ever wrote was an origami book for kids and adults and has since written over 40 more books. He has taught the application of folding techniques into design in over 80 colleges and universities in 13 different countries. He now lives in Israel.

The reason I choose Jackson is because I like the simplicity of some of his work, like his pop out work and his mirror folds work. I like both of these sets of work as it shows that you can make something as basic as paper look really interesting with a relatively simple method.

In terms of inspiration I’ve gotten from his work, I definitely took inspiration from how simple some of his work is as I’d like to keep my work rather simple as to not make things too difficult for myself or make something that’s too overly complicated and confuse myself.
