Graphic Design & Illustration Workshop – Contextual Research, Pushpin

The third and final graphic designer I decided to do some research on for this workshop is Pushpin.

First off, Pushpin’s website about them has such an interesting hand drawn aspect to it that I’ve never seen before, it was cool to see. Pushpin Studios was founded in 1954 by Milton Glaser, Seymour Chwast and Edward Sorel with Reynold Ruffins joining them shortly after. The four met at the Cooper Union in New York as students and were a revolutionary force in the field of graphic design. In the 20 years of collaborative graphic design that followed after the four met, Pushpin expanded and redefined the illustrator, designer and visual culture at large at the time. Pushpin rejected tradition as they preferred reinvigorated interpretations of historical styles like art nouveau and Victorian as well as art deco.

Pushpin sells there work which ranges from posters and products to original illustrations and limited edition prints as well as sketches and drawings. Their style is extremely unique so no one print looks even the slightest bit similar. The level of detailed also differs from design to design as some illustrations are quite detailed while others are relatively simplistic by comparison but each and every one is definitely one of kind.
