Product Design – Artist Research, David Trubridge

The third and final paper artist that I researched is David Trubridge.

Trubridge is based in New Zealand. He’s recognised as a leader in environmentally responsible design as well as one of the world’s most preeminent designers. In 2008, Trubridge was listed as one of the top 15 designers in the world by the French Express. Trubridge didn’t initially plan on starting a global lighting business or to stay in New Zealand. In 1973, after doing some travelling and studying Naval Architecture, Trubridge bought a pair of stone ruins in Northern England and, along with a group of friends, set about restoring the pair of ruins.

The reason I decided on researching about Trubridge is because I found the shapes of his lighting pieces interesting, they were shapes you wouldn’t typically think a light would be shaped like. I thought the unique shapes that were cut into the lights were fascinating too.

I was inspired by the shapes of Trubridge’s work as well as the interesting and unique shadows that each piece of work cast on the walls and ceiling. I hope to possibly try and incorporate the same sort of interesting shadows into my own piece of work.
