My projects in foundation year at UU

Graphic design, 12 paper designs.

12 paper designs

For our second Graphic design class with Pauline we were asked to make 12 digital and 12 paper designs.

I decided to play with the idea of layering the material I used, with loads of different colours, based of the sketches I previously had from the first class.

It’s hard to describe what I did for every single one of these images, but I wanted to experiment and do something different for each one.

I decided to play with different vibrant colours to get a positive and playful feeling to them. I used two different materials, 10cmx10cm paper and plastic I found in my partners house from folders in different colours.

When I did the digital ones I had a lot of fun playing with the opacity between layers and I wanted to do it again but with the paper ones, so in three of the 12 I decided to use plastic to mimic the opacity layers digitally. I’m extremely happy with how they turned out. Esp the one with two squares connecting with a grey background. In that one I had one pink plastic layer and one blue plastic layer on top of each other. They were both cut identically with measurements. and then I cut the pink layer individually to make a blue square blue, and not purple or pink. Then I glued the two plastic layers together forming this colour changing layer. I also painted a few white lines to show where the edges were supposed to be.

I used a lot of different techniques doing this.
Layering, as I said, but I also used folding, folding & cutting, and weaving. The weaving was probably the most entertaining one. Since I’ve never previously weaved with such a delicate material.

Most of these ideas were spontaneous, I wish I could indeed sketch them down before I would create them. But because of my eager personality with an exploding creativity I always end up using my head as a sketchbook alone.

I’m more than happy with what I contributed with here. I love the colours and I had a lot of fun using different techniques, new and old ones. The experimenting parts were the best, since I love to figure out how to use new materials with techniques.
