Michael Bierut
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, United states. Michael Bierut is an award winning graphic designer, design critic and educator. From an early age he had interest in art, and went to attend saturday morning classes in Cleveland museum of art, where he developed his drawing skills. Michael graduated from University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP) in 1980 with a Bachelors of science in Graphic design. After graduating he moved to NYC to work for Massimo Vignelli, an Italian Graphic designer. During that time, Vignelli Associates did not have computers nor fax machines, so Bierut was responsible for creating mechanical boards by hand. He worked at the company for 10 years, eventually becoming vice president. During his time at Vignelli Associates he realised that people don’t necessarily show interest in a company’s printed materials and now strives to create engaging works that would want to read. In 1990 he became a partner in the NY office of Pentagram. At Pentagram Michael has had various big clients, with very successful designs that have been unique, clever and revolutionary in terms of design and creativity.

Michael is an innovative graphic designer, with several of his works presenting new ideas that’s revolutionary and engaging with the people. He has had several talks and attended big conferences talking about graphic design and some of the projects he has done. He will talk about the projects in the details, even when it went wrong, and how to solve certain issues, helping graphic designers around the world to teach them how to overcome the obstacles when making designs. I wouldn’t say that Michael has any certain styles he keeps to when it comes to his projects, since he’s doing commissions for companies. He’s talking about how you have to think about what the company stands for, what their background is and how to make it new, but not too far away from what the customer wants. Graphic design is about pushing your creativity and being innovative, come up with new clever ideas, dare to be bold and take risks, dare to be simple and not overwork ideas. He brought several of these points up and talked about it when he spoke during the event Offset 2012, in Dublin. During that speech he brings up seven rules that are very important to keep in mind when working with customers as a graphic designer.

As a graphic designer you don’t really put your name on your work, especially when companies hire you to do the design and the art. Michael Bieruts’ work has been seen worldwide, even in places you haven’t thought about. A good example of this is the newest design of the Mastercard logo. If you have a Mastercard, rather new one, there is a big chance you have the new logo that Michael Bierut designed. We barely pay attention to the artist behind the work, just what the company represents.
Another big project he worked on was for the presidential campaign 2016, he and others made the logos for Hillary Clinton’s campaign with two other designers from Pentagram. One of the more impressive works he made was ‘The New York Times’ building and their sign. He had to help them create a sign for the building, but at the same time they wanted the workers to be able to look out of the window. They came up with a brilliant idea to make the sign using poles with different thickness to create the logo. Which is one of the more innovative works he have done.
