Research fashion/textile – designer/artist

Research, Fashion and Textile designers.

For this workshop we were asked to do a little bit of research about two designers and one artist in terms of textile and fashion. I chose these three creators because they’re sparking my interest for several reasons. I had a lot of fun doing this research and learning new information about these amazing three women.

Fashion designer

Atsuko Kudo

Atsuko Kudo is a Japanese fashion designer based in London, UK. She doesn’t use regular fabric, but latex.

She’s well known in the latex industry and has worked with several well known women such as Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé and many more. Her designs aren’t only fashion for individuals, because you can also see her garments in Movies. Such as Ghost in the Shell.  She’s a world leading designer when it comes to making latex a more comfortable and fashionable material and making people dissociate it with fetishism, and make it more empowering for women.

There are several latex fashion designers out there, but Atsuko’s work is different. She uses techniques such as filigree, exclusive prints and folding techniques no one has seen before in the latex fashion design. Latex is a very delicate material but sturdy when used right. To be able to filigree it takes extreme precision and extreme knowledge about the material.

She makes unique designs for her garments, you can do custom orders and buy premade pieces at her store in London.

Textile artist

Rachel Wright

Rachel Wright is a textile artist based in the UK. Graduated Fashion and Textile at Birmingham City University, to later on set up her own business in 1994. She’s an independent broider that uses nature as the main inspiration for her work.

Her father was a great inspiration since she was young, being an artist and also encouraging her to observe her surroundings and draw. He also encouraged her to visit art exhibitions and galleries. Even though her father was an artist using media such as oil and gouache, she got the inspiration to create art using textile from her grandmother.

Rachel’s work is made using two techniques, hand embroidery and machine embroidery. Mainly machine nowadays because hand embroidery would take much longer, even though it’s her favourite way to express herself, it’s less time efficient compared to machine.

She uses scraps of different textiles with vibrant threads on paper and fabrics to create a vibrant but accurate art piece of something you’d see out in nature.

Textile Designer

Mia Fransson

Anette - @kladnypan Instagram Stories, Photos and Videos - MystalkMia Fransson, aka, FraMia Design is an independent textile designer based in the capital city of Sweden; Stockholm.
She’s not very well known, but her textile designs can be found in several retailers that have used her fabric for fashion design all over Sweden. She also makes her own tea towels and pencil cases, which you can buy by contacting her on facebook.

She does commissions for retailers when it comes to fabric design and also personal designs. Mia also does embroidery on top of some of her creations that she makes.

Her designs are detailed and extremely colourful, inspired by nature in Sweden and its wildlife. Mia creates her designs for the textiles digitally while illustrating them. Using thin lines and a watercolour technique to make it look like it’s illustrated on paper with watercolour. She uses a lot of detail work in her designs, which makes it extremely stylized and also makes it feel more welcoming.
