Nobody likes me – “ihatestencils”

Another creative and successful street painting, done by an unknown artist that goes by the name “ihatestencils” on instagram.
Picturing an everyday situation that happens all over the world. The piece is called ‘Nobody likes me’

Social media is an everyday activity for most of us, that chose to have it. Many people have managed to gather a bigger following than others. Some deem this to be successful; a life goal. Influencers on social media seem to live the perfect life and a lot of people want the same. By posting our everyday life online, documenting it for the world to see. The more likes you get, the more followers you gain, the more popular and liked you are. But that’s not the reality. Many people get upset, even depressed when they don’t get as many likes as they want, because they think it’s because no one likes them.

While this isn’t really an extremely famous piece, it’s something that speaks to me and should to others as well. It’s a piece that shows where we are and how much we depend on others for reassurance, attention and that we have a good life outside of social media. Which isn’t something a person should focus on, rather what happens in real life, not how you portray it online for others to adore.

Banksy – Love is in the Bin

Banksy is a well known street artist known for his controversial pieces that have caught the attention of many individuals worldwide. Being involved with several riots and protests making statements about the ongoing situations around the world. One of his most famous works are the girl with the balloon and a man throwing a petrol bomb, but instead of a petrol bomb it’s a bouquet of flowers. The man with the bouquet of flowers was made when squatters were driven out from an abandoned building because they planned on building a Tesco there. There were protests, and Banksy made that piece to either mock the protesters that they shouldn’t get violent over something like that, or that violence won’t solve problems, but to rather be rational about it and do it peacefully.

His greatest pieces have been street art but the shredding of one of his works live during an auction captured my eye.
Whilst no one really knows the reason to why he did that, many believe it has to be an act of rebellion that his art shouldn’t be privately owned by an individual, or that the art loses its sentimental value when owned by a certain individual. It is a strong message, to destroy your own art when it’s sold to another individual. Even though it was meant to destroy the whole piece, after many test runs and it was successful, the real shredding failed. Only 2 thirds of the piece got shredded.

This is my research assignment I got in the Alternative means workshop to research about two artists that were doing art different from the norm to get their controversial messages out.
I enjoyed this a lot because I got to learn about how art can affect the world, from just a street painting.
