Jon Hicks || Pocket profiles

Jon Hicks (1972-) is an English designer, that is best known for his Logo and iconography project.

Before establishing his own company Hicksdesign in 2002 that he runs with his wife, Hicks worked as a designer at Coventry City Council and Heinemann publishing, with a degree in technical illustration and an HND(Higher National Diploma) in wildlife illustration. He is also the author of the book “Icons: The Icon Handbook“.

A Hicksdesign, Hicks and his wife offer a wide variety of services, such as:

  • Web & Product design
  • Brand Identity
  • Iconography
  • Print

Over the 20 year period, since he established his own design company, Hicks has played a significant role in iconography and logo design which we see on a daily basis. Whenever we use our technology, the vast majority of the users don’t think twice about who the designer behind certain graphics might be.

Hicks was the designer behind several projects, such as the update on the skype emoticons(2011), the design of the firefox logo(2004), and from an application that a lot of people use, the Spotify Iconset(2014). These are all from a different time period online but are still with us today. He is also the creator of the fonts Bryan, in memory of his father, as well as the Hill House font, which was inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s handwriting.

When it comes to designers, especially the designers behind the graphical design we see every day, we don’t really see a name of the fantastic logo and or icon designs. Hicks have made designs that I saw growing up, even today, and it’s really nice to finally be able to put a name and a face on who made them.
