For this week, we were to animate a flour sack character.  I had to plan out the actions I wanted the flour sack to perform and so I thought it would be good to draw out some rough ideas of what I would like to animate the flour sack doing in the scene.

I decided that I wanted to animate the flour sack bowing as if an audience was hidden behind the camera.  I added in the flowers being thrown to further portray this.

The method I used when creating this was pose to pose, meaning I started out with the most important/key poses first and then worked on my timing and added the in-betweens after.  I think this made it a lot easier to see how I wanted everything to be featured before committing to animating everything.  This also meant that I could change certain positions or movements without it affecting all the frames.

I feel like this worked well and I am very happy with the result.  The timing is good, which was something I was struggling with a lot while working on this.

Continuing with the ‘design a world’ project, we were to create storyboards based on the rough idea we have planned out for our 30-second animation so far.  This meant that we could then share it with our group to make sure that everyone was on the same page and fully understood what each scene in our animation would be.

This was the storyboard I created.

This was very helpful as there were some things that other people included in theirs which I had never considered to include in mine – for instance Alisa’s idea of having the characters shown on the map in the second scene.

After getting feedback on our storyboards, we needed to pull all our ideas together and build up a more solid story plot.  Alec had suggested adding more scenes showing the characters and what they were doing.  I can now see that the way we had it would have been confusing to other people who didn’t already know the plot.

I thought a path on the map at the start showing where the characters were heading and where they currently were would be a good way to show that they are on a journey.

Another element we have to work on is the characters.  We were all confused on which characters were going to be featured in this animation and we haven’t got solid character designs that we can all agree on yet.  This is something that we will be solidifying next.  We want the characters to be interesting but also simple enough that we can all replicate them in our own style.

Megan’s part, scene 4, is directly before mine and as both scenes are focused primarily on the characters, we are planning to discuss how we will make the transitions as seamless as possible.

Everyone’s storyboards looked great and I think this exercise greatly helped with understanding the plot as well as showing us what needed to be worked on or improved going forward.
