Fine Art – First Sculpture – Process

For my first piece I decided to use clay to create a life-sized sculpture of my object in a lying down position, as it is a material I am familiar with and enjoy using.

I started creating this sculpture by rolling out a slab of clay and carving the shape of my life size object, I then  used a coiling technique to build up the initial shape of the body however I found it difficult to carry on using this technique to created the arched shape of the body, so then switched to using slabs which worked much better. After creating the body I then used clay tools to add texture to the sculpture.

Innovation/Provocation

3D printed Ceramics

3D printed ceramics is the most recent innovation within the ceramic field: first introduced to the industry in the 1990’s, it has constantly grown in both its development and popularity. This form of ceramics allows artists to use CAD (Computer Aided Design) software to produce ceramic pieces. This process can be used for many areas within the ceramic field as it can be used to mass produce products e.g., bowls and other crockery, create complex and small ceramic parts, e.g., ceramic based computer components as well as creating both small and large sculptures and art pieces that have been designed using a computer. 3D printing allows ceramic products to be easily mass produced as it gets rid of the need for people to create the products; Although this allows more products to be made in a quicker time frame and reduces the probability of error, there are many ceramicists that are against the use of this process within the ceramic art forms as it overlooks traditional ceramic art methods as well as extinguishing the unique human qualities found in hand built ceramic creation.

Fine Art – Photography

The object that I have decided to sculpt for this project is a stuffed red panda teddy that I own named Timmy. Here are some photos of Timmy in the positions I sculpted him.

I decided to us this object as I can change its positioning which will allow for variation within my series of sculptures.

Fine Art – Drawings

The first image in an A4 coloured pencil sketch of a red panda that i photographed at Chester Zoo last year. I wanted to create this drawing as I liked the positioning and fur colours of the animal  in the photo and it is also the same animal as the stuffed teddy object I chose to sculpt for this Worksop. I am very happy with the end result of this drawing, although if i were to change one aspect of it, I would have put more detail into the foliage in the background of the drawing.

The second artwork is an acrylic painting (dimensions: 46cm by 64cm) on brown card. The composition of the object in this painting is the same as that of which I chose to create my first sculpture. I am pleased with the textures i was able to capture when creating this painting; however, I struggled with getting accurate proportions as I painted from life and did not sketch the object out first.

The third artwork is a chalk and charcoal drawing (dimensions: 42cm by 60cm) on black paper; Again, the composition similar to that of the previous, just from a different angle. I am extremely pleased with how this piece turned out.

Product Design – Product Statement

Over the past 2 weeks I have designed and developed a product that protects the user from getting splashed by water. I call it SplashSafe.
SplashSafe is a small and compact device that sits comfortably around the neck, emitting a forcefield to protect the user from getting splashed by water, replacing umbrellas, shower caps, clothes protectors and more. Its simple design is appealing to the modern-day user as it is a fashionable alternative to cumbersome umbrellas. I decided to go for a simple, collar like design, as modern fashion trends are heading towards minimalism and closer-to-the-neck designs. I have opted for a soft silicone design as it is both comfortable for the user as it is somewhat flexible, allowing it to easily fit around the user’s neck shape. Silicone is also waterproof; this is a key design feature as the product is designs to protect the user against water. The product will also be available in many different colours, patterns, and textures to appeal to a large audience range from the elderly to children. SplashSafe’s round the neck design is optimal compared to other locations such as the abdomen or wrists as it allows the user to easily interact with the product’s functionality, all the while being up to date with the latest fashion trends. Placing this product on the neck allows the forcefield that the product emits to evenly cover either/both the head and the body. The product uses micro tech to emit a type of forcefield that covers the chosen area of the body, protecting it against getting wet or dirty when it is raining. The user chooses whether they want to cover just their head, just their body or both by the use of a button on the product. Clicking the button once to turn the device on/off and twice to switch between cover modes. To ensure the fashionable appearance of the product is not compromised the charging point is hidden at the back of the device.
