Audience
The audience of an artwork are those who consume it, they are important as they decide what the world thinks of your work and are in many ways a part of it, their experience of viewing and defining it shape it. The artist, whether self-consciously or not will have infused a picture of society into their work- the viewers are in a way looking at a mirror that the artist it holding up to them.
Jason deCaries created series of underwater sculptures made to distract attention from natural reefs to allow them to heal and thrive, whilst providing a place for more reefs to grow all while raising awareness to their deterioration due to climate change. The audience is able to partake in this series by diving among the statues, as part of the world’s first underwater museum. In this art we see a portrait of society, a society bleaching life from the earth and killing ecosystems, but also a society full of people willing and trying to do something about it.
