Battleship Trivia

For this project we were asked to take the game Battleships and make it more interesting, to do this I added trivia questions, in order to guess the other players co ordinates you must first correctly answer a trivia question with a thirty second timer, if you cannot answer then you forfeit your go. I added the timer aspect to the questions to add pressure and raise the stakes. I also added the threat of having an extra ship in your fleet, in the original rules before the game begins each opponent rolls the die, whoever rolls highest goes first. In the new rules the highest score still goes first, however before each player rolls the other has a chance to predict what number the die will land on, if they guess correctly then their opponent has to add an extra ship to their board.

Original rules

  • Each player rolls the die, highest score goes first
  • Place your ships on your board, they may not be placed diagonally- there are 5.
  • You have one question per turn to guess a co-ordinate of your opponents ships, if you guess correctly your opponent will say ‘hit’ and you add a red peg to your upper board, if your guess is incorrect then your opponent will respond with ‘miss’ and you will add a white peg to your upper board. The other player will also place a red peg on their ship where you have guessed.
  • Once you opponent successfully guesses the co-ordinates of one ship then you say ‘you sunk my ship’. The aim of the game is to sink your opponents entire fleet before they sink yours.

Modified rules

  • Each player guesses a random number, they each roll the die, if your opponent lands on the number you guessed then they have to add an extra ship to their fleet, the highest number rolled goes first.
  • Place your ships on the board- same rules apply here as original- the pieces and board are now magnetic, not pegged on.
  • Pick up a Battleships Trivia card and start the timer, you have sixty seconds to answer the question, if you are successful you may proceed with the classic game play of guessing your opponents co ordinates and placing pins accordingly- if you cannot answer or run out of time then you forfeit your turn.
  • First player to sink their opponents ships wins the game.
