Punk Rock was a musical movement of the 1970-80’s that strayed from classical conventions. The music industry was controlled by money, it cost to record music, and hire artists to create album covers, with record companies improvement of technology, their old recording devises were left cheaper and therefore more accessible. Album covers were handmade by the artists to save money and to protest against the ideal that a record must be professional in order for the music to be good, these covers would sometimes show instructions on how to make your own music and vinyl cover, inspiring other artists to the same. The album art style would range from surrealist works of art with freaky images, graphic black and white, cut out text and defaced imagery. Covers and lyrics were often provocative and openly shaming public figures and mannerisms. These socially defiant musicians wanted their voices to be heard, John Robb in a TEDxSalford talk said “You don’t like what’s going on and you make a noise about it” and highlighted the importance of the DIY movement in breaking barriers, it was purely about making music and sharing your opinion with the world.
