Art Direction contextual research

Art direction is the management of an artwork to ensure that the desired effect is achieved. Art direction takes place in every area of media, from artworks, photography, film, advertisement and product design, it is vital that art direction is used to provide a coherent theme and that the desired emotion is evoked in the audience. An art director is employed to oversee and manage the project to ensure that the main goal is achieved to the highest standard possible, for example if you want the audience to cry while viewing your product it is up to the art director to oversee every element of the project to ensure this result. While every project may not have a separate art director employed, art direction should still be used. An example of good art direction is Baron and Baron magazine, they use graphic black and white spreads with bold typography to create a clean luxurious image often with an accent colour. I love the spread ‘cowgirl’, the model interacting with the typography is very clever, giving the font personality and a higher purpose on the page. The paragraph of writing layered in the centre of the O creates a balanced pleasing composition when viewed with the title on the first page. Overall, the spread looks very sleek and professional while possessing a fun and fashionable characteristic.
