Vanessa Barragao

Vanessa Barragao is a Portuguese textile artist who uses a range of techniques to create pieces of work that promote an important message about the environment and sustainability. Inspired by the textile industries negative impact on the deteriorating coral reefs she creates large scale works of art using scraps from Portuguese factories and waste fabric. A range of techniques such as crochet, macramé, felting and weaving, I find combining these techniques gives the piece an interesting dynamic, with varying texture and components protruding from the work. To promote sustainability, she The fade from lively hues to white shows us the stark reality of the reefs and is very effective in posing a very important question about the environment.

Marta Brysha

Marta Brysha is a hand embroidery artist who draws inspiration from the natural environment to create intricate pieces of work that focus on the details rather than the bigger picture. She is interested in the motifs and patterns that can be found in nature and that are appreciated by all cultures. Her method of dying her own threads allows her to capture any colour she desires giving her work a unique quality. She uses silk to manipulate the light direction giving her work an ethereal appearance and combines an array of hand stitching techniques for texture. What I enjoy most about her work is that even though she is working with a time-consuming medium there is an unsymmetrical impulsive element achieved.
