Week 4 – Colour

This week, we studied colour theory; this included types of colour schemes and the use of colour to create atmosphere.

Firstly, we were asked to take scenes from our favourite movies or anime and make colour palettes based off them.

I used a colour picker to take the colours from each screenshot, then condensed those palettes down into the most prominent colours. I tried to choose three very different types of colouring; dark and moody, muted, colourful, and cartoonishly vibrant. Each type of colouring reflects the nature of the show; the darkest colour scheme is from a serious sci fi show, and the brightest colour scheme is from a fast-paced comedy.

Next, I learned about different types of colour schemes; monochromatic (different tones of one colour), analogous (colours next to each other on the colour wheel), complimentary (colours opposite each other on the colour wheel), and triadic (colours in a triangle across the wheel). To look into how these colour schemes work, I chose one and edited some of my earlier concept sketches to follow the schemes. I chose to do an analogous colour scheme.

I coloured a sketch from my sketchbook with blue and green pens to practice, then did a warm, sunset themed colouring for one of my thumbnails.

Finally, we were asked to take a drawing of a landscape and colour it to fit two different moods, to show how colour schemes affect mood. I chose to make a mysterious scene and a joyful scene.

Overall, I learnt how I should think about how my colours will look together and if they’ll be visually appealing, but I should also think about what kind of atmosphere the colours will create.
