Week 3 – Value

This week I studied value and how it’s used to create depth in images. Value is the scale of light to dark in a piece, represented in greyscale. It’s often considered to be one of the most important aspects of art, as it can make or break some works. It’s important that pieces have clear areas of high value (light tones) and low value (dark tones) to make the image easy to read, to give it depth, and to make it more visually interesting.

I was asked to create 6 thumbnail drawings utilising value to show depth – the further away something is, the lighter and more faded it should appear.

I tried to utilise one point and two point perspective in my thumbnails too, to avoid making them look flat. Once I’d sketched out all the thumbnails, I chose my favourite and added onto it as a full illustration.
