Through artists collaborating, we are able to create pieces that alone, would have been almost unimaginable. When it comes to Pablo Picasso and Gjon Mili, the difference between their individual work is massive. Some would argue that they belong on completely different ends of the art world. Picasso most known for his bright, static, abstract portraits is completely different from Mili’s black and white, movement based photography. Mili was known as a “lighting innovator” due to his incredible innovation when it came to photography and lighting. When him and Picasso met when Mili visited Picasso in France in 1949, it didn’t take long for Picasso to become inspired by Mili’s work and begin collaboration with Mili and create his own art with light. “[projected] 30 drawings of centaurs, bulls, Greek profiles, and his signature.” (1) Mili used two cameras to be able to capture and frontal and side view of the spontaneous shapes and drawings that Picasso was creating in seconds. Through this collaboration, both Picasso and Mili were able to combine their styles and passions to create art that, if not captured by Mili, would have otherwise disappeared into the air and never seen again. They were able to bring each other out of their comfort zones and allowed them to explore and be free with their work.
