Week 7 Sketchbook

This week we were prompted to look at artists such as Andy Black and consider using ink as a way to draw, I don’t use indian ink often so it took getting used to but I liked what I created since I like to use lots of vibrant colour this was different for me.

This was my first attempt, I do like the depth in the shadow of the gravy and the blotchy-ness from oversaturated paper it looks quite interesting. I tried to blend but found the indian ink works better for me in solid levels of tone instead of building the tone with layers of a light wash, to just commit to a darker tone. The second attempt for the gravy boat was much better and I really liked the chair and background I managed to get much cleaner edges with even solid tone instead of trying to blend. I stopped thinking of it as I need to be careful and worried about making mistakes because the ink is permanent, this helped me work better and embrace mistakes .

Continuing from last week I did some more with the crayons, above I drew pencil shavings from sight which turned out really well, they looked scattered across the page again as if something being left behind a human presence, remnants of the self.

This is done in A5 with water soluble crayons, I one of the photos I have been taking documenting things around my house as a loose reference, to document my own experience and look specifically at items I have touched or tampered with showing I had been there. I took inspiration from Tynan and Matisse for my method of drawing this as well letting the crayons marks show through and drawing from my perspective in an almost flat skewed manner.
