“The Purple Robe” Henri Matisse
When looking at Matisse I was drawn to their work because of his expressive use of line and colour to differentiate and break up the flat imagery. The artwork is often impressionistic using life as simply the inspiration, which I like to do as well in terms of colour and patterns making a piece more balanced. While the above image has lots of elements they don’t seem to overpower one another or make the piece too one-dimensional, the use of tone and lots of colour creates a needed variety. Although in my own work I tend to be more simplistic I will take note and try to incorporate some of Matisse’s ideas into it moving forward, to consider my pieces. They break up their piece with their changes in colour and line, managing to keep vibrant patterns and colour in the work without creating a cluttered image.
