Modelling Billboards

This week I modelled some modular signs based off of the concept art that Dan had created a previous week. I ended up making four signs in total, with two being portrait and two being landscape.

All of the signs consist of a simple cube which will be the billboard sign itself. For the frames of the billboards I used cube polygons and used the multi-cut tool and the extrude tool to make the boarder wrap around the edge of the billboard. I then selected the edges on the corners of the frames and bevelled them to create rounded corners.

For the pipes I used cylinders and increased the subdivision count so that I could recreate the curved shape that could be seen in the concept art. I then added two cylinders to the sides of the billboards that will attach the billboards to the buildings.

I then repeated this process for all of the other billboards.

Once the signs were finished I then UV mapped them and assigned materials to the different parts of the sign to make the texturing stage of the project easier for the members in charge of 2D work.

I also made a smaller sign that could sit outside of the stores on the streets. Once again this sign was based off of Dan’s concept art.

I started off with a simple cube and used the multi-cut tool to cut out the area for the poster to go in and for the light that is built into the side of the sign. I then made two more faces at the bottom of the sign and extruded them to create the legs. I duplicated this cube and positioned it to the other side of the sign to create this double sided sign.

I then added the extra details such as the light at the top, which was just made using three cylinders. For the parts sticking out of the sign I used cubes and moved the vertices to get the correct shapes.

Overall these billboards were very easy to make as they all had very similar designs, which meant that I could duplicate elements of one billboard and use them again for another billboard. I think that these billboards will make a great addition to our sci-fi city as although they share similar features, they are all different enough so that we have a variety of designs to pick from. The smaller sign was also very easy to model as well, as it followed a similar process. Our sci-fi city will be covered in signs and so this will help to make the city more visually appealing as we won’t be using the one sign design over and over again.
