Modelling Continued

This week I worked on modelling the bear for the claw machine at the top of the arcade. Before I started modelling, I created a reference image to show the bear from the front and from the side so that it would be easier to model.

Since this would be an organic model, I decided to use Blender to model the bear. I initially modelled using spheres for the different parts of the bear, however I when I started to to sculpt the shape of the bear I realised that it wouldn’t work as the bear wasn’t symmetrical. I then restarted the model, this time using MetaBalls to get the shape of the bear. Once I was happy with the base shape, I turned the metaballs into a mesh. This turned out to be much more effective while sculpting, as the bear had better symmetry.

Once the bear was finished, I exported the file as an fbx and imported it into Maya. I added some spheres for the eyes and nose and then worked on the UV maps. I then sent the fbx file to my group so that they can texture it.

Overall I think this week went well as it allowed me to revisit Blender. It was good to refresh my memory of the software and I think that I improved my sculpting skills this week. Although I found the bear difficult to model, I’m quite happy with the result and I think that it looks very cute.
