Study in Emotion (Continued)

This week I continued to work on my study in emotion. In my previous blog post I talked about how there were some frames that that caused the character’s legs to jump forward/backwards, which ruined the flow of the animation. I knew that I would have to fix this first, so I could continue to add more changes to my animation.

Version 3

In this version I fixed the frames that would cause the character’s leg to jump forwards/backwards, which makes a big improvement to the flow of the animation. I also fixed my animation so that the character’s feet no longer go below the grid. Overall I’m happy with the flow of the animation here.

Final Version

While reading The Animator’s Survival kit, I found a section where Williams explains how to add weight to a walk cycle. He says that in a walk cycle we shift our weight from one foot to another with each step. This is seen in the movements of a person’s hips and shoulders.

Since my character is just a sphere, I imagined that the black centre line represented the character’s hips.

I think that adding more movement to the hips made a big improvement in my animation and I believe that it helps to convey emotion even more now.
