Character Design
This week we took a look at character design in our lectures. When designing a character it is important to include details that can show part of their personality to the audience. Our task for this week involved coming up with our own character designs for our design a world project.
This week I continued my work for the submarine group. As the other members wanted to draw the cult people and underwater creatures, I decided to come up with designs for our two protagonists. I wanted to come up with two contrasting designs to show the different personalities of the two protagonists.
I first came up with the design for Jay, who is the male protagonist for our world. I imagined Jay as an experienced journalist. He doesn’t believe in the rumours of the missing submarine and actually makes fun of Anna for believing in them, he’s only joining her in the investigation to prove a point.
In terms of appearance, I wanted to give him a very tired and scruffy look by giving him messy hair and beard. I also gave him dark rings under his eyes. I also tried showing this through his outfit with his patched up jacket and his old worn satchel with stains on it. Since he has more experience as a journalist, I wanted to show that he is better prepared for the investigation. I decided to give him props such as a audio recorder and a torch which will be essential for them while exploring the submarine. His appearance was also heavily inspired by Robert Pattinson, as our group submitted pictures of him to use as reference (see references list).
I then came up with the design for Anna, who is the female protagonist for our world. I imagined that when compared to Jay, she would be very inexperienced as she’s just started her career as a journalist. It was her idea to research the missing submarine for a scary article, however in reality she’s actually terrified due to the old ghost stories surrounding the rumours of the submarine.
In terms of appearance, Anna’s design is very tidy when compared to Jay’s. I also decided to give her baggy clothes which would be comfortable to wear when working while still maintaining a professional appearance. I also wanted to show that she’s very unorganised as she’s only brought a single notebook, and even then her notebook is a mess.
For their colour schemes I wanted to use darker colours to fit with the dark horror theme of the world. I tried giving them a similar colour scheme with the use of green so that they could have a matching aesthetic.
Overall I am pleased the designs, however I believe that I should have drawn the two protagonists together to see how well they look together. I may need to change the colour schemes as I believe that they may be too similar now.
