For this section, I decided to look at the video on blackboard ‘why are there so few female artists?’. I was attracted to this video as I found it to be something I never really considered before. I was unaware there was such a large missing piece in the art world where female artists aren’t as critically acclaimed. in this video it explains that more-so in the past, the work completed by females wouldn’t have been seen as worth anything or not good enough. This was especially true of those works completed through textiles, where it was seen as a craft/hobby for women and not ‘true’ art.

The video also drew attention to the fact that there wasn’t a lot of art in museums/exhibitions from the past as it is very difficult for these places to get hold of them because they are so in demand, and now prove to be more expensive in the bidding wars as everyone is looking for more female art. To me, this would seem as though there may be a positive outcome for the future of female art due to this as female art is becoming more appreciated and sought after.

I also discovered that women weren’t permitted into some of the art schools- these were solely for men as women ‘couldn’t be artists’. Even if art colleges did accept women into the courses, they would’ve been encouraged into textile work that wasn’t seen as proper art.

This video draws attention to the fact that most of the art students today are female, which can seem a worrying factor after looking at the art world of the past. I believe that although the work of men has been glorified in the past and treasured much more, I think that the art world of the future has exciting things in store for female artists.

Yayoi Kusama was one of the few successful female artists of today, she is a Japanese contemporary artist working in sculpture in installation. Kusama was mentioned in the video described above as being within the 5 percent of female artists making up the art sale funds today. this is a disappointing amount- but it is a very good achievement to be made from any female artist.
