Firstly, when presented with the word ‘identity’ I would think of people in how they come across and what makes them unique or themselves. what are the characteristics that make up the content of their entire character? After going down different routes to find out what I really believed identity to mean, I turned to the nearest Bible to me to explore the topic further.
The Christian religion believes we were made in the ‘image of god’ and this is who we are. Our identity is in God as we are based upon him. in the Bible he says that he made us and who we are for a specific reason. in Genesis 1:27 it states ‘So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them’. We are versions of what God himself looks like
Colossians 3:3 says ‘For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. The belief behind this verse is that we should be living according to God’s agenda set out for us- for when we die on Earth we shall appear with God In glory.
In relation to identity- the verse is meaning that we should be reflecting our identity in christ in all we do as God has given us another greater life after we die. So, when thinking ‘identity’ is to do with how your personality and actions are perceived by others- in the Christian faith it would be deemed as this idea of living according to God’s will which has been predestined for you.
‘Reflecting your identity in Christ’ can be done in many ways such as studying the religion through reading the bible, praising God, worship music, preaching to others, etc.
whether or not I believe in the Christian faith, I don’t think I necessarily need to in order to find some sense in the reasoning behind this theory. As predicted, the Christian belief is similar to ones of my own where I assumed the identity would come through the personality of an individual or the specific characteristics that make up the identity of a person. This relates to the Christian belief that living through Christ is done by their actions taken and decisions made so that each of these are according to God’s will and that they glorify God.
To Conclude I believe my hypothesis to be correct based on the theory according to the word of God- identity lies within the decisions and actions of an individual.
Hi Holly, I would love to have read a bit more about why you choose the Bible to explore the topic further. This may seem obvious to you, but to the reader its not and by you discussing a little more about your rationale as to why, it helps your reader follow your discussion – I hope that makes sense?
Good job!
