Will 3D Printing tech revolutionise the fashion world?
In this video it explores the relatively new groundbreaking idea to use 3D printers to create garments or wearable material. Designers have developed new ways in which they can use the newest technologies to further expand the work of fashion into a new form.
Different ideas have been raised in this video to make a moveable fabric that can be used in the making of garments in order to strive to reduce labour costs and increase production, which may help some companies who could be willing to invest in this sort of new venture.
In reflection to the content of this video, I think this is a clever idea and could be used to reduce waste- for example if the material going into the 3D printing machine was made up of a mix of recycled plastics then the idea would be a more sustainable method to creating garments.
I also believe that the designing of the clothing will take much more valuable assets away from a business like the time needed in order to design the different concepts as I believe it is not an easy task to be able to programme all the different areas of the garment, as well as the time needed for the printing process as I believe 3D printers are relatively slow compared to a garment factory.
The link below is a video from Unicef titled ‘What is Innovation’ from their ‘Explain like I’m Five’ series. I was initially attracted to this video as it is aimed at younger kids, this is because to really begin to discover the meaning of innovation, I would imagine you need to think about it in its simplest form- therefore ‘sitting in’ on how it is explained to kids would be helpful to ‘dumb it down’. The video looks at the meaning of inventions and how it can help different people like in the home or for less fortunate kids around the world. Unicef specifically are wanting to gather new ways to bring these less fortunate kids things like healthcare and education to improve their quality of life.
This video has challenged my idea into what innovation is as when I first think of innovation I think of technological advancements like the latest iPhone or electric cars. What I don’t imagine when I think of innovation is how it can be used to help others, which is why I believe I have been challenged and can reconsider my ideas and personal conventions relating to the subject of innovation.
Excellent choice Holly and really good reflective piece- well done!
