The following images are just some notes I took throughout the lecture and ceramics demonstration, I found this to be an interesting lecture and I learnt a lot I didn’t know about ceramics. the different processes and techniques to making the piece really intrigued me to learn more and has sparked an interest in ceramics.
I chose this piece below to use for my ceramics piece, I thought the tall building with the cone shape roof was interesting and I really like the lines made from it.
Below is my drawing for the clay to be placed on, I have tried to simplify the lines as the clay pieces will be thicker than this and detail won’t be as easy to put on.
This is my first tile below, I think I should’ve used more consistency when it came to creating the coils of clay as I have some taller and chunkier than others that are shorter and thinner.
After making the clay piece I then bent it around a vase to get the curved shape, I put a cloth below so it wouldn’t stick to the vase and be difficult to pull 0ff.
Below is my second clay piece, I ran out of clay during this one so had to use my own clay that was different to make up the gaps, this is shown from the darker sections. I don’t think using this other clay was a good idea but it did fill up the space necessary.
I left the clay around this vase overnight to dry and bond together. I hoped that once the vase was removed it would stand alone. I had a lot of difficulty getting it in this shape as I think when I was bending the clay I had left it too late to do so and it was too dry and crumbly.
Below is a little video of my piece after I broke it trying to lift it away from the vase, I don’t have an image of it from when it was complete as I broke it before I could do this.
