Graphic Design: 12 Paper Drawings

Finished drawings

For these 12 paper drawings, I decided to move away from the monochrome approach of my initial 26 drawings, and instead developed a colour palette to work from. The colours were pink, blue and turquoise, as I believed that these would compliment each other whilst still providing enough contrast. I measured each frame 80mm x 80mm. I wanted to explore a more illustrative approach too, since my initial drawings were very vector based. I included brush strokes and splats of paint, as well as trying to make the drawings seem quirky. This was my first time creating art with an illustrative style, and although I did enjoy it, I found it challenging to keep an energetic and playful style without it looking unintentional and messy. I do think that the inclusion of colour strengthened the overall appearance compared to my initial monochrome drawings, and in particular I think the last frame with the paint splatters is interesting. I wanted to make my lines more free and unrestricted, for example in the “progress” frame featuring the layered bricks, I tried to incorporate curved lines and a variation in thickness, compared to the rigid, straight lines in the initial drawing. For the first frame which displays “unit”, I decided to have the paint and the outline staggered, in an attempt and create a fun and interesting style.

3D Experimentation

From creating the 2D paper drawings, I decided to venture into 3D work, something I have no experience in.

For this piece, I used black paper and utilised height to represent “scale”. I enjoyed making this frame and although it remains in the monochrome theme, I think the black is effective for creating a more sculpted appearance.

I then wanted to try a different medium and go further out of my comfort zone. I mixed heavy structure gel with black acrylic paint and tried to layer it to create a three-dimensional art form. It was difficult to keep the circular shape, and I struggled with the texture of the gel, but I also like the unique textured finish it created as its something I’ve never created before.

This is another shape I created to represent “space”. I utilised black paper this time to create the formation, however I felt that it had lacked interest, and so I added the white paper square to try and create something intriguing.

Again, for this “pattern” frame I used the mixture of heavy structure gel and black acrylic paint. I found this creation to be the hardest as I struggled make the dots circular and neat. Out of the 3D creations, I feel like this one is the least successful due to the untidiness of it. However, I did enjoy experimenting with a different medium and tried to push myself beyond my comfort zone.
