During class we were introduced to our next assignment which is to sculpt a cute character using Blender. To help us get used to Blender, we followed along to an apple sculpting tutorial and watched some Blender fundamentals videos over the week. We were also told that it is crucial to stay away from anything involving hair or fuzzy texture for this assignment, unless it’s something you’re actually modelling like large tufts, as it would be too hard to cover the entire character in fur when sculpting unless it’s just making textures that give the illusion of fur such as in Substance Painter. For the apple sculpt, we used the following reference:

We placed the reference in the different orthographic views and started grabbing areas of the sphere using the grab tool to match up with the reference image. My apple sculpt is shown below:

For the record sculpting is not fun since I was struggling a lot trying to get things right as it’s hard to tell which exact vertex or vertices to grab and when I grab one area to make it match up with the reference in one view it messes up another area in the other view, same with trying to make the apple more rounded as opposed to cube-like as it would end up looking circular at the top but the rest of the apple would remain the same as before. The apple I sculpted looks like a lumpy mess despite my best efforts and I’m not looking forward to having to sculpt for the assignment if my struggles with the apple are anything to go by. I’m hoping my skills will improve for sculpting the cute character for the assignment and it doesn’t end up looking too bad.

Once class was over, I was too busy working on stuff for other module this week so I didn’t do any work apart from thinking up a cute character concept I could do. Initial ideas included a cute fox or a cat, and I decided to go with the cat idea but expanded upon it so the cat has a purpose for looking so cute and the scene has context. I then came up with the idea of a cat standing beside something they accidentally broke, such as a broken plate, and is trying to escape punishment by looking cute and sad so the owner would go easy on it. Next week I will make some concept art of the cat before I begin sculpting it.
