During the one to one tutorial with Alec, we recapped on what we were talking about the day before with the one to one tutorial for the other module before moving onto discussing this module. For the group animation, I reminded him I was part of the snail assassin one and Alec suggested about meeting as a group to discuss feedback and any changes to be made to the animatic and any character designs. He also discussed the coming individual assignment and that soon during class we would have a look at the rig.
Since I was working right up to the wire with my modelling assignment for the other module and only finished everything shortly before the midnight deadline, I didn’t have time to work on anything relating to this module until a couple days before it since I wanted a bit of a break from work on Monday. Once I had my break, I decided to work on modifying the victim design to include more form and shape. My modified victim design is shown below:
I designed the victim to have a shape similar to that of an hourglass with a bigger head and base and thin neck in order to foreshadow that his time being alive is running out for the victim as he is going to get killed. The hourglass reference I used is shown below:
As well as this, I made him look dumb and oblivious with the eyes being further away which also highlights his innocent and blissfully unaware nature and as a result has no idea he is being targeted. The shell being the plainest spherical shape imaginable shows that the victim is in fact just a plain regular old snail who is nothing special or out of the ordinary so really nothing about him should make him stand out as being threatening since his round shell shows his innocent nature so it’s a mystery to the audience what he did to have the mob boss snail pay the assassin snail to kill him.
When I showed the design to my group however, they were quick to point out that the top looks like a hammerhead shark and not something akin to a snail which wasn’t intentional, so I had to adjust the eyes and eye stalks to look more snail-like. My adjusted victim design is shown below:
I think this new design came out quite well while conveying the same meaning to the audience as the original does and I believe I utilised form and shape effectively within the design. I also stuck with the colour palette in the 4th design from last week but tweaked the design a bit so that the base of the snail matches the main colour of the shell and removed the spotted pattern on the back of the neck but kept the spotted pattern for the shell. I also added some cheek freckles to once again highlight his innocent nature and his lack of awareness on the danger coming his way.
Next week I’ll try modelling the design in Maya and fixing the animatic so that the pace isn’t too fast and any right-to-left movements are fixed to left-to-right like we were told in the feedback. I’ll also hopefully have the group call next week as well to discuss what everyone is gonna be doing to improve based on the feedback.
