When presented with this brief I was very excited as it sounded really interesting and I couldn’t wait to start sketching my ideas out on paper. I began by sketching ideas out on paper using my Pinterest board as inspiration. I was experimenting with shapes and lines to create a geometric line pattern.
Using Procreate I was able to digitalise some sketches. I wanted to use Procreate before Adobe Illustrator to ensure I knew exactly what pattern and shape I wanted and also to make sure it looks good digital.
I found it hard expressing my ideas as I had so many in my head but they wouldn’t come out on paper. This made me overwhelmed and feel stressed by the fact none of my designs came out the way I had envisioned. I decided to take a break and return back to pencil and paper whilst doing a little bit more research on Pinterest.
I digitalized two potential sketches although, I did not like the outcome
I came up with several ideas, one being an abstract map along the side of the bus so I printed out a map of the potential route the bus would take, but yet again my designs weren’t coming out like I had planned.
I then went back to my original design plans and tried to make a potential design incorporating some basic elements. I wanted it to be simple so it would come out how I planned but also look appealing to the eye. I used circles I had previously sketched out to try to create a bubble effect on the bus. Using Adobe Illustrator I created different circles, both solid and patterned, and arranged them on the bus. I am really pleased with how it came out. I sampled the bus in a variety of colours keeping to a monotone theme, although I experimented with the ulster university colours.
Also using a design I had previously created, I added it onto the bus to see what it would look like and if I liked it. I find this design interesting and I wished I had developed it a bit further before giving up on it.
For the name, I had really liked Unilink as it incorporated both the university and the Translink name in it. But I had created another name “Econnect” pronounced e-connect. I played on the idea of sustainable transport and using econnect as a name allowed me to highlight the word eco and make it stand out more. I kept the front of the word in the darker colour of the bus whilst the second half of the word is in white. This allows the different sections of the compound word to stick out more. I used Helvetica bold for the typeface
