Following my experimental elements, I was able to select the best outcomes and produce posters using them as primary elements. As I was able to experiment with a variety of media and forms I had a great pool of ideas that I could use to generate my posters, resulting in a grand mix of different themes of posters. I thought it was best to experiment with many options on Adobe Illustrator before selecting a style and my final poster.
For these posters, I used the collages I did of road signs. I printed out different road signs, of different colours that were designed by Calvert or featured her typeface. Then I cut up the signs and collaged them together in different shapes and glued them together to produce an unconventional form, with the words becoming incoherent.
For the illustration section of my experimentation, I created sketches of road signs and letters based on Claverts typeface and designs. I added ruled lines ad angles to give the impression that they are primary sketches of these designs. I then used them as a repeating pattern for posters.
Using Calvert’s fonts, Calvert and Transport, I simply used type to create initial poster designs.
Using photography as the prompt, I used different photography that related to Calvert’s work. I added type to these photos to create more of a poster feel to them. For the final image, I used road signs of Calvert’s designs and added distressed images of different opacities to create a sense of dimension within the poster design.
Inspired by the previous sketches I did of Calvert’s letter design, I decided to recreate it using Illustrator. I began with a simple letter in the typeface Calvert, and using the line and ellipse tool, I was able to add sketched lines, reminiscent of physical pencil and paper sketches.
IN the exhibition, at the start of the walk, there is an image of Clavert’s desk where she would work. I made a list of things that could be seen on her desk, from the mundane to the obscure, creating a poster that best encapsulated what was typical of her and her working life.
