Collaboration is apparent in numerous practices. From the use of ghostwriters in writing and popular music often being a product of a collective group, it’s evident collaboration seems to make a good thing better. Within art, the lines begin to blur. Unlike previous example collaboration in art isn’t necessary (Collective, n.d.). Ordinarily, artists tend to create art within their own space perpetuating their own philosophies and concepts within their work, validation is never essential. However, when it comes to collaboration in art, there is another voice present, one that is independent and plans to instill, at least, some of their ideas into the prospective work.
Mutual respect between artists is key to creating a collaborative installation. Each artist must have equal opportunity within the art piece (Sherwin, 2011). Andy Warhol teamed up with graffiti prodigy Jean-Michel Basquiat to create a collection of pieces, the most notable is entitled ‘Olympic Rings’. (Bozovic, 2017). The two passionate artists were able to collectively create a piece of art that intertwined both their styles yet, still was able to symbolise and convey the same message. The art consists of a series of Olympic rings, by Warhol, connected by the unique graffiti style of Basquiat. Without the other’s input, the art piece would have been seemingly incomplete and lacking but the work of the two artists fuse together to create an immense and unforgettable piece.
