Illustration Workshop- Quite Literally

This was our second illustration workshop. The focus of this session was compound words and expanding your mind to look at things in a different way and to learn to think outside the box as everything isn’t as it seems. We began the workshop by experimenting with different compound words. We had ten minutes to come up with a selection of words, and quickly sketch some potential ideas correlated with that word. I began by breaking up the compound word into its constituents and found it easier to form ideas.

Next, we had to choose what we felt was our best or most promising idea and further develop it in a series of thumbnails, experimenting with compositions . I chose the word ‘cowboy’ as I thought it was a funny idea and was excited at the possibilities that could come of it. We had 10 minutes to do this

Finally, we chose the panel which we felt encapuslating and communicated the chosen compound word the best and further developed it to a full illustration. We had 45 minutes to complete this task.

I really enjoyed this workshop and decided to do another sketch using the word ‘eardrum’.

Overall this was a fun and inspiring workshop. It helped me understand the importance of communication within illustrating and learned about the world of editorial and commercial illustration, which was something I have never considered before. The premises of the workshop was to teach us to think outside the box and also the importance of time management and distilling our ideas done within a limited amount of time.
