Game Design- Battleships

For the Game Design workshop we were given the brief to reconfigure a game of battle ship to give a more interesting and exciting gameplay. I began brainstorming ideas that I could incorporate into the game to try make it more enjoyable but still relatively simple and easily understandable. The day before, I was playing a game of monopoly and I wondered what would chance cards in battleships look like?

This is the element I decided to include in my battle ship board game. I didn’t want to make the game way too complex, more so than it needed to be and personally, I do like battleships the way it is. The inclusion of these cards adds another element to the gameplay and allows for more risk taking in the game and more reward.

Instructions:

  • The original instructions still stand
  • However, there are a total of 4 chance pegs given to each player.
  • Each player positions their boats along with the chance pegs
  • When the game commences, the opposing player could easier hit your boats or a chance peg
  • IF they hit a chance peg, they must pick up a chance card and complete the instructions on the card.
  • The only way to get a chance card is if you hit the opposing players chance pegs

Chance Cards:

Pit stop: If you pick up this card, You are allowed to retrieve a sunken ship OR you can repair a sinking ship. You can relocate this ship.

Bouncing Bomb: With this chance card, you can wipe out an entire row OR column of your choosing on your opponents board.

Backfire: The bomb your opponent fired backfired and must hit their board in that position instead.

No Thank You: If your opponent hits your ship to the point it has sank you can decline to reveal whether or not it has sank.

Eagle Eye: The opposing player must reveal a coordinate of one of their ships.

Rapid Fire: You are allowed to have 3 uninterrupted shots at your opponent’s board. They can only tell you the number of coordinates that were a hit.

Boom: You can use a supercharged bomb that will hit an area that is 3×3.

On The Bench: You can’t drop a bomb for 3 turns.

Attempt Failed: Your ship is protected from the forthcoming attack and your opponent’s attack has failed.
