Juan Sánchez Cortán, Still Life with Quince, Cabbage, Melon and Cucumber
For this image, I used regular food items i had in fridge. I used a red and green pepper, tomatoes, a banana, sweetcorn, an orange and a lemon. Although they aren’t exactly the same vegetables Cotán used in his art I think they give the desired effect. For the background I used a cardboard box to mimic the window sill the original artist used in his. I hung some of the vegetables up using string ad tape. Using the string I was able to create different levels to each subject. I experimented with different compositions. For lighting, I used a warm toned light to create the orange hues usually associated with dutch still life.
Jenny Saville, Closed Contact 14
I used natural light to recreate this image. The blue light helped accentuate the various tones and hues present in the skin. The subject squished her face against the shower glass. The window reflected off the glass giving depth to the image. I experimented with the direction the face was dragged against the glass and also incorporated hands and hair into the images.
Giovanni Strazza, Veiled Virgin
I didn’t have anything in my possession that resembled the veil seen in the image, so I had to compromise. I found a black, mesh t-shirt that i used as a sort of veil, although the colours contrasted to the original piece. I also tried to use slow shutter speed to create an interpretation of a veil over the face. It acted as an obscurity to the photo and the face.
